Mission Statement
The mission of the McHenry Area Youth Commission (M.A.Y.C.) is to
“Keep healthy kids healthy” by sponsoring prevention programs for
youth that promote responsible choices about drugs, alcohol, violence
and gang involvement provided through a community-based linkage of
educational, governmental, and human service agencies within the
McHenry and Johnsburg area.
History of M.A.Y.C.

The McHenry Area Youth Commission was created with the goal of keeping youth
drug-free by providing educational programs, awareness activities, and positive
alternatives to substance abuse. In April of 1988, the following government entities
entered into an intergovernmental agreement to the formation of the McHenry Area
Youth Commission. These government entities include: The McHenry and Nunda
Townships, the City of McHenry, and School districts 12, 15, and 156. In 1993, the
Village of Johnsburg was added as an additional representing entity.

Each government entity holds two board member positions on the M.A.Y.C. Board of
Directors and is responsible not only for their financial contribution but also for
carrying out the purpose and mission of the Youth Commission. The Board of
Directors supervise the programs provided to the community by the appointed
Program Coordinator.
Prevention
programs are an
investment in the
future of our youth.
What We Do ...

Our purpose is to carry out our mission. Therefore, we establish programs
that will help to produce youth that are self-confident, youth that are able to
make responsible choices regarding alcohol and other drug use, violence
and gang involvement. The commission works to combine the talents and
resources available to make this possible. Our programs and activities
enhance trust, communication and cooperation between and among
generations, all while building the resiliency in our youth to encourage them
to make healthy decisions.

In addition, our programs and activities not only increase self esteem and
leadership skills, but also increase some basic life skills like: problem
solving, conflict resolution and decision making skills. We educate on the
risks associated with alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, as well as the
risks associated with gang involvement and the use of violence.

We are a resource in the community and can provide you with technical
assistance if and when you need it.
